Essays are, by definition an essay, which is a piece of writing that provides the author’s argument however, the definition is somewhat vague and covers the entire range of a letter, an essay as well as a newspaper, an article, pamphlets and even a short story. The way essays are written will determine whether they are formal or informal. This means that an essay written for formal purposes is usually written in a structured manner, using proper syntax and grammar. An informal essay might be written in simple language, and may have poor grammar. There are formal kinds of essays which are utilized often even by those who are not as skilled writers.

Another kind of essay is the descriptive. Also known as the narrative essay. Instead of a lengthy outline of some topic the type of essay will present information from a variety of sources in a clear and concise manner. It is a storytelling essay that tells the story of a key concept, character, or event in a narrative format. Many universities and colleges require precise descriptions of the information and figures that are relevant to the subject as well as an end-of-course report that discusses the strengths or weaknesses of the subject, and the intended application of the information gathered.

Argumentative essays are the third most sought-after kind of essay. It tends to be more complex than the descriptive essay. Arguments are presented in support of a central idea and are generally composed in response to other people’s arguments. Students must be able to critically examine the arguments of both proponents and opponents within their essay–employing their knowledge of the subject to address the question “What do you think is the proof?” in a manner that is based on sound reasoning.

The fourth and final most popular kind of writing is the comparative. Comparative essays compare one thing or set of objects to another and discuss how they are alike or different. They require thorough investigation to determine which information and figures are relevant to the argument they are supporting. The conclusion is an essential corrector online part of any comparative essay. It summarizes the findings of the analysis.

The other kinds of essays commonly required to earn college credits are descriptive and argumentative. Argumentative essays are ones in which the writer simply makes a point. They often draw on personal experience or a research study. Descriptive essays are similar to argumentative essays, except that they include a story or description of something that has been experienced or observed. Both types of academic essays–arguments and descriptions–contend about the subject of the essays, and the aim is to persuade the reader that the conclusion they draw is correct. Sometimes, an academic writer may choose to write an argument or a description. This could be the topic for separate essays.

Writing essays require the writer to employ different ways to write. They should not only contain the main ideas, but also include additional information to support the key points. Students should be able, after completing the essay, to support his/her opinions with additional facts that are valid. However, he/she should always aim to leave the reader feeling that their/her opinion was the most logical.

Students should avoid the mistake of focusing too much on the expression of their thoughts, as this can often lead to oversimplification–a common problem among students who attempt to write persuasive essays. Instead, they must aim to provide a clear and precise description that is backed by solid research, for their opinions. A descriptive essay might not always be more convincing than an argumentative one, but it will most certainly be more engaging to the reader.
